Phil Cox

Principal

Phil Cox brings more than 33 years of experience in public education to his role as Head Principal. A native of Harlan, Kentucky, Phil discovered at an early age that basketball could open doors and create opportunities through hard work and determination. That passion led him to become a standout basketball player winning Mr. Kentucky Basketball and playing at Vanderbilt University, where he was a four-year letterman, team captain, earned multiple All-SEC honors, and was later inducted into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame.

Phil holds a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lincoln Memorial University. Throughout his career, he has served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, vice principal, and principal, dedicating his life to helping students grow academically, personally, and in character.

Most recently, Phil retired after 20 years at Jefferson Middle School, serving seven years as vice principal and athletic director before leading the school as head principal for 13 years. He became known for his servant leadership, high standards, and genuine care for students, families, and staff. Phil is passionate about creating a positive learning environment where children are encouraged to reach their God-given potential.

Phil and his wife, Kim, recently celebrated 36 years of marriage. They reside in Townsend, are members of Rio, and are blessed with three children and one grandchild. The Cox family is excited to become part of the school community and looks forward to partnering with families to help students grow academically, spiritually, and in character.
